Stupidly I did not have another back up, so I paid a data recovery company to try and recover them the first time - it cost a heap of money and they were unable to recover everything. Twice I have had them fail, losing several hundred pics each time. I use a Macbook Pro with very little internal storage so I have been using a WD external drive to store photos, which are accessible via LR.
